Born in Birmingham, England, Pye was the founder of modern landscape engraving. He illustrated popular art annuals and produced plates for landscapes by artists such as J.M.W. Turner. He wrote Patronage of British Art (1845).
It is assumed he is the Pye who engraved some plates for M. Flinders, A Voyage to Terra Australis (1814).
