Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born about 1856, as his age was given as 35 in a South Australian newspaper of 22 April 1891 which published information on the Elder Exploring Expedition of that year.
The same newspaper also refers to him as ‘a native of South Australia’ so, presumably, he was born in that State. His father was the Hon. J. G. Ramsey, M.L.C., of Eden Park, Mt Barker, who had died before 1891 . Previously, Ramsey had been overseer of a station property in Queensland, but he joined the Expedition as axeman, chainman and ostler, and it is recorded that he and others left Adelaide for Warrina by early train on 22 April 1891 and joined up with a special camel train at Farina. The official journal of the nineteenth century, rarely mentions subordinate staff, but it did note that Ramsey helped nurse W. Bowden, who later died on 7 May 1891.
