Born on 31 March 1850 and died on 7 November 1914; in the latter case the place was most likely in New South Wales, possibly Sydney.
He entered the teaching service of New South Wales in 1885 and was appointed teacher of Science and Arts, Country Districts, Bathurst, and the next year he was Science Master at the Bathurst Technical College. In 1904 he was appointed Lecturer-in- Charge, Department of Chemistry and Metallurgy, Sydney Technical College.
He is honoured in the name Eucalyptus rossii. When Baker and Smith described the species in Research on the Eucalypts, especially in Regard to the Essential Oils (1902), they wrote that the eucalypt had been named in honour of Mr Ross ‘who has rendered material help in procuring specimens for the research’
