Alf was a very keen amateur botanist who has had a particular interest in growing and classifying Banksia, a large Australian plant genus. He studied them for a Master of Science degree at Monash University and was active in establishing a large living collection at Cranbourne near Melbourne. In the 1980s he was a prolific contributor to a project to map the natural distribution of Banksias in Australia.
He was also active in propagating and growing plants, in revegetation projects and in the various activities of the Australian Plants Society, The Friends of the Valley Reserve and other natural history organizations.
