Born in Scotland on the estate of the Earl of Crawford where his father was head gardener. Died in Sydney 30th August, 1835 aged 56 years.
Proprietor of the Darling Nursery, Sydney. He was a practical gardener who lectured on horticulture and landscape gardening and encouraged the cultivation of New South Wales plants. He delivered lectures on the horti-culture of Australia. at the Mechanics' Institution, Sydney, which are reported at length in the '"Sydney Herald" in the year 1834. They were separately published as "Lectures on the Horticulture of New South Wales, delivered at the Mechanics' School of Arts, Sydney,� 8vo. pp. iv. 80. Sydney, 1835. (The preface contains some brief particulars of his family). " Lectures on Landscape Gardening in Australia," 8vo. pp. viii. 95. Sydney. 1836. (The Botanic Gardens copy has two pages of notes in the holograph of the author). There is a marble tablet to his memory near the pulpit in St. Andrew's Scots Church. Sydney, the work of W.
