Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Henry George Simmons was the son of Richard J. Simmons, who was Curator of the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens from 1902 to 1931.
He was employed at the Rockhampton
Botanic Gardens before and after service in the first
AIF in the First World War.
He worked as Deputy Curator from 1921, and then
as Curator from January 1932 to June 1957.
He was a
keen naturalist with an extensive knowledge of Central
Queensland flora. Specimens from early collections are
held in the Queensland Herbarium, together with
material collected from Blackdown Tableland during an
expedition in 1937 of which he was a member.
He
successfully propagated native plants for cultivation in
the Gardens, and shared his knowledge and enthusiasm
with others, including members of the Rockhampton
Naturalists' Club.
His co-operation with visiting scientists and naturalists was
mutually beneficial. They included botanists D.A. Herbert, C.T. White and S.T.
Blake (Brisbane), and C.J. Chamberlain (Chicago), entomologist R.J. Tillyard, and
many others.
