Born at Axbridge, Somerset, England, in 1866 and died in Kensington Gardens, Adelaide, S.A., on 14 December 1931.
He migrated to Australia when he was about 15 years of age.
He was a memher of the Hardy wine-making family and specialized in fermentation and chemical processes. He studied under Bertrand at the Pasteur Institute of Paris and on his return to Australia held a position at the Royal Park Laboratories, Melbourne, and in 1911-17 was botanist with the Department of Agriculture of Western Australia when he apparently returned to the family wine business in South Australia.
He had been awarded a DSc by research from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 1915/16.
He is honoured in the name Eucalyptus stowardii Maiden (1917) and was collector of the type.
