Sturgiss, James H. (Jim) (Major) (1890 - 1983)

Born at 'Glen Dor', a property in the vicinity of Lower Boro near Tarago on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales on 10 May 1890; he died shortly before Christmas in 1983. 

During World War I he served in Egypt, Sinai, Palestine and Syria from 1915-19, and attained the rank of major.  On his return he leased 30,000 acres of country on the Sassafras Plateau and resumed his pastoral interests, with side-line activities in dingo control and catching wild horses.  When the botanical name of Eucalyptus sturgissiana was published in Contrib. N.S. W Nat. Herb. 4(5) (1972), Johnson and Blaxwll wrote — ‘This species is named in honour of Major Jim Sturgiss of Sassafras, who discovered most of the known populations and who sent material to this Herbarium on several occasions.’
