Born in England, one of at least five children, to settlers John Sutton (c.1839-1915) and his wife Betsy (d.1920). The family migrated to WA and established Wingate Apiary near Waroona (originally known as Drakesbrook).
Margaret (as 'Miss M. Sutton') collected MEL specimens at Drakesbrook, 1896.
In 1901, she married Eustace Gordon Welch at Hamel, and they had at least one child.
Margaret died in 1947 in Perth.
