Born in Northwich, Cheshire, England, on 16 August 1813, died in Beaumont, South Australia, on 5 November 1899.
Replaced Babbage on the Lake Torrens expedition of 1858. Some specimens, particularly from Mt Serle, South Australia, are in MEL. Other collections are from Venus Bay and the head of Spencer Gulf. Led another expedition from Alice Springs, Northern Territory, across the Great Sandy Desert to the Oakover River in Western Australia in 1872–1874.
