Born at Mullumbimby, NSW, 9 November 1955.
His
tertiary education was at the Australian National University, Canberra.
The science diploma was forestry. In 1991 he was doing
part-time work for a PhD through the Department of Geography,
University of Tasmania. In March 1991 he took up a research forestry
position with the Forestry Commission of Tasmania. Previously he had
been involved in the Resource Assessment Commission consultancy
assessing conservation adequacy of rare and endangered species, and
similar work.
