Born at Palmerston North, New Zealand, on 21 February 1895 and died in the Megalong Valley of the Blue Mountains, near Sydney, N.S.W., on 29 September 1942.
He came to Australia at an early age and was educated in Sydney. He was on the staff of the Colonial Sugar Refinery Co. as a chemist in 1912 and in 1916 joined the A.I.F., but was soon made an explosives chemist for the Ministry of Munitions in Scotland. After the war he returned to Australia and in 1919-35 was economic botanist at the Technological Museum in Sydney; he joined the Division of Wood Technology of the Forestry Commission of New South Wales as a senior research officer in 1936.
