Born at Bathurst, NSW, on 21 November 1866; died at St Vincent's Private Hospital, Darlinghurst (Sydney), NSW, on 22 October 1942.
He was employed as a guide at the Jenolan Caves, NSW, on 1 September 1879. He became caretaker of the Caves on 20 October 1903, and had the title 'Superintendent of the Caves' from 1 July 1925 until he retired in 1932.
During his time there he made many
notable discoveries and was an expert on the development of caves. His
advice and assistance on the development of limestone caves were sought
by other States in Australia. He visited a number of caves
overseas. After his retirement he gave talks and illustrated lectures
on Jenolan Caves, especially around the Sydney area.
He is honoured in the name Eucalyptus wiburdii Blakely (1934), and was also collector of the type.
