Yates, Colin John (fl. 1990s-2020s)Colin was awarded a PhD from Murdoch University in 1994, for a thesis titled: "Factors limiting the recruitment of
Eucalyptus salmonophloia F. Muell.
(Salmon gum)".
He joined Kings Park as a research fellow (Research Scientist, Restoration Ecology) from 1997 - 1998. Yates worked on the restoration of woodland ecosystems, particularly in Kings Park, publishing several papers associated with his time at Kings Park and subsequently with students based at Kings Park.
In 2001, while working as a senior research scientist in Biodiversity Conservation in CALM, he was a finalist in the Australian Museum Eureka Prize togeter with Professor Richard
Hobbs (Environmental Science,
Murdoch University). The nomination was for their cooperative research focusing on the
conservation of temperate eucalypt
woodlands across Australia, and on
the experimental restoration of
degraded woodlands in Western
Australia, culminating in a book titled
'Temperate
Eucalypt Woodlands in Australia'.
In later years his research covered ecology and vegetation dynamics studies, fire effects on ecosystems, species distribution and climate change, plant and animal studies, rangeland and wildlife management, wildlife ecology and conservation, and coastal wetland ecosystem dynamics.
Together with Ellen Hickman and Steve Hopper, he co-authored an interesting paper on 'Botanical illustration and photography: a southern hemisphere perspective' in 2017.
