Born at East Kangaloon, near Robertson, NSW on 11 May 1874 and died at Guyra, NSW, on 17 March 1962.
He came to Guyra when only 10 years of age and farmed at 'Rosehill', near Guyra, for the rest of his life. He had a keen interest in botany and ecology, especially in the trees of the Northern Tablelands (the type, of Eucalyptus youmanii was collected at Rosehill), and besides collecting with W. F. Blakely and the Rev, E. N. McKie he assisted botanists of the Sydney Botanic Gardens and staff of the Forestry Commission of New South Wales. His interests extended to the propagation of plants for schools and other institutions in the area, as well as raising exotics such as firs from Siberia and yew from England.
