Paul grew up in South Australia where he is remembered for his rock music activities with bands such as 'Nasty Nigel And The Teenage Hellcats'.
He was employed at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in the late 1980s to mid 1990s as technical support for the Orchid Research Group and later with the Education Unit.
He participated in an ANBG orchid collecting trip to New Caledonia in November 1992.
For a while in the 1990s he was employed as a Ranger on Norfolk Island for the Norfolk Island National Park, administered by the Commonnwealth through Parks Australia.
