3.5.3 Student training
Background
The collections of the Gardens and the large body of professional and
technical expertise held by the staff provide a potential training
environment for tertiary students of botany. The Gardens has
embarked on a scheme for senior botany students at the local
universities: the scheme is designed to provide some formal
instruction and an intensive period of work experience in a herbarium
and research environment. The scheme operates during the summer
vacation and has the support of the universities, one of which grants
course credits for participation.
Management prescriptions
Objective
The objective is to provide training and work experience
opportunities for senior botany students.
Implementation
Participation in the training scheme will be open to second- and
third-year university botany students. Staff of the Gardens will
provide formal instruction on the activities and tasks of the
Herbarium and research unit and will supervise the students as they
perform technical tasks in these areas. Students will receive formal
certification of their participation in the scheme.
