Erect shrub to 3 m high by 1.5 m across. Leaves are obovate, to 15 cm, often toothed or lobed. Bears red flowers in spring in large terminal inflorescences to 15 cm diameter and surrounded by large red bracts. Floral emblem of NSW.

Propagation From seed.

Cultivation Outstanding shrub and cut flower. Excellent drainage essential. Full sun or a little shade required. Prune heavily after flowering to allow good flower production the following year. Fruits are also attractive if allowed to set. Many cultivars, bred for the cut flower trade, are now available.
