Born in England, c.1824, died at her home in NSW 22 January 1889.
One of four children, to Thomas Mulcaster Marshall (1790-1866), and Sarah née Foster (1792-1872). The family migrated to Melbourne, Vic., in 1840, where Mary's father became a land commission agent. In 1843, Mary married James Hodgkinson (1811-1892), of 'Woodstock Station', and they had nine children.
In 1865, Mary's husband declared himself insolvent due to the cost of litigation with a business partner. The family moved to NSW in 1866 where they became the first settlers at 'Lennox Head' at the mouth of the Richmond River.
Mary collected MEL specimens (including fungi) at Richmond River, 1870, 1872, 1874-1875, 1877-1879, 1884-1885, 1887-1888.
She collected types of:

She probably collected types of:

Károly Kalchbrenner identified Mary's fungal specimens for Mueller.
Mary's daughter NINA HODGKINSON also collected MEL specimens.
Mueller gave Mary a copy of his Select Extra-tropical Plants (1885).
In 1889, Mary died in in her home aged 66.
