Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born in Scotland, probably in 1866, and came to Western Australia when he was 21.
He was head gardener at the South Perth Zoological Gardens until the late 1920s, when he was retrenched during the economic depression, but as this would have been c. 1929 he was already about 63 and nearing normal retiring age.
He then devoted himself to collecting native plants and seeds and was responsible for introducing many new species to science. He made two very extensive tours with Ivan Carnaby as far east as Kalgoorlie and south to Ravensthorpe. Other trips included the west coast from Bunhury northwards to Geraldton.
He is honoured with species of Eucalyptus, Acacia and Melaleuca named after him.
