Born 8 October 1884, in Cumberland, England; died in Toorak, Victoria on 14 August 1972.
Winifred Waddell was a mathematics teacher who was passionate about Australian plants. In 1949 she formed a wildflower preservation group within the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria. This group became the Native Plants Preservation Society of Victoria in 1952, with Waddell as Secretary.
She worked tirelessly to establish wildflower sanctuaries around Victoria, the first of over 70 being at Tallarook in 1949.
A collection of articles written by Waddell for the "Junior section" of The Age newspaper between 1960 and 1964 was edited for publication as Wildflower Diary (1976) by Jean Galbraith.
