  Basal squamules evanescent, 2–4 mm long, 1–2 mm diam., crenulate to irregularly lobed, esorediate. Podetia growing from basal squamules or with emorient bases, 2–5 cm tall, 1–3 mm diam., simple or rarely branched, tapering, corticate, esorediate, esquamulose; apices subulate or rarely with deformed scyphi; cortex smooth, areolate, slightly pruinose. Apothecia marginal on deformed scyphi, brown; not seen in Australian specimens. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: K+ weak yellow or K-, KC-, P+ red. Atranorin (major), fumarprotocetraric (major) and protocetraric (trace) acids.
     
  Occurs in N.S.W., Vic. and Tas., and also on Macquarie Is.; also in Europe, North America and Japan; grows on soil.
