Cladonia enantia Nyl.
     
  in W.von Zwack-Holzhausen, Rev. Cladonia 1 (1888). T: locality uncertain, probably Wellington, New Zealand, 1867, C.Knight 204; lecto: H-NYL 38740, fide D.J.Galloway, Fl. New Zealand Lichens 112 (1985).  
     
  Basal squamules persistent, conspicuous, 2–5 mm long, 1–2 mm diam., sublinear, escyphiferous, esorediate, with irregularly crenate margins. Podetia growing from basal squamules, 1–2.5 cm tall, 0.5–2 mm diam., simple, becoming fastigiately branched near apices, with open axils, escyphiferous; cortex areolate to warted, esorediate, rarely squamulose near base, longitudinally split. Apothecia always present, terminal, 1–3 mm diam., convex, brown to dark brown. CHEMISTRY: K-, KC-, P+ red. Fumarprotocetraric (major) and protocetraric (trace) acids.
     
  Occurs in W.A., A.C.T. and Tas.; also in New Zealand; grows on soil. .
