Basal squamules persistent or evanescent, 2–5 mm long, 1–2 mm diam., irregularly crenate to lobate. Podetia growing from basal squamules, simple, with a corticate base; cortex continuous or areolate, becoming warted and scaly to subsquamulose, finally ecorticate and granular-sorediate in upper parts; scyphi 1–2, rarely to 4 cm tall, 4–10 mm diam., rarely with marginal proliferations with apothecia, or in the form of scyphi; scyphi interior ecorticate with granular soredia or tiny, flattened, corticate scales. Apothecia on margins of scyphi, solitary or clustered, 1–3 mm diam., convex, pedicellate or not, red, or rarely pale fawn; uncommon in Australian specimens. CHEMISTRY: K-, KC+ yellow, P-. Usnic (major) and iso-usnic (major) acids and zeorin (major). | ||
Occurs in W.A., N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas., and on Macquarie Is.; also in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Antarctica and New Zealand; grows on soil or rarely on dead wood. | ||
