  Thallus to 4 cm wide, swollen when wet, round or irregular, pulvinate, epruinose, dark olive-green, brownish or blackish green, sometimes greyish to bluish green. Lobes broad, flattened, imbricate, adnate. Upper surface glossy, markedly rugose in parts; isidiate or lobulate. Apothecia usually dense, 0.8–2 mm wide, sessile, sometimes subpedicellate with constricted base; disc flat to slightly concave, smooth, epruinose, dark red, red-brown, pale or dark brown; thalline exciple either thick, prominent, rugose to granulose and persistent, or thin, not prominent, smooth and disappearing. 65–90 × 17–26 µm. Ascospores 52–95 × 4.5–5 µm, twisted, vermiform, thinner towards one or both ends, 10–17-celled, not constricted at septa. Pycnidia not seen.
     
  Known from N.S.W. and Tas. Occurs throughout the northern hemisphere, South America and New Zealand.
