Thallus forming orbicular patches to 12 cm wide. Lobes somewhat flattened, branching dichotomously, esorediate; outer lobes free, lacking lateral contacts, varying from 3–4 mm wide in older parts to 1 mm near apices. Upper surface markedly rugose, always deeply wrinkled, grey to yellowish grey. Medulla mostly solid. Lower surface strongly wrinkled, fading to pale brown or whitish near apices. Apothecia common, subpedicellate to pedicellate; receptacle thick, wrinkled, funnel-shaped; disc 5–18 mm wide, concave becoming ±flat or convex, pale brown to brown; thalline exciple entire becoming crenate. Ascospores 6–8 × 4.5–5 µm. Pycnidia common, appearing as black dots particularly near lobe apices. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, P± orange. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, 2'-O-methylphysodic acid (minor); alectoronic acid (trace); and very rarely physodalic and protocetraric acids. | ||
Common in subalpine forests of N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas, very rare in S.A.; grows on bark, twigs and dead wood. Also in the south island of New Zealand. | ||
