| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate to pulvinate, 2–8 cm wide, 150–500 µm thick, leaden grey or blackened. Lobes rotund to oblong, ±gyroso-undulate; apices ±recurved; margins ±isidiate, ±obscure; surfaces ±matt; wrinkled, isidiate; wrinkles anastomosing, ±thinly lamelloid, ±plicate, ±forming accessory lobes; apices crispate; isidia cylindrical to flattened, coralloid, 40–70 µm thick. Lower surface rarely isidiate, naked or occasionally with small holdfasts. Apothecia rare, submarginal, pedicellate, 2.5–8 mm wide; disc concave, flat or convex, orange-brown; thalline exciple leaden grey; upper margin of proper exciple conspicuous, cream; pedicel dilated, attached at upper margin of thalline exciple. Ascospores ellipsoidal to broadly fusiform, muriform, 30–40 × 10–17 µm; apices acute to acuminate. Pycnidia not seen. | ||
| Primarily a southern South American species but widespread in montane or coastal areas of south-eastern Australia. Rare N from Wollongong but collected in north-eastern N.S.W. and S Qld; also in A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. Widespread in New Zealand and recorded from Papaua New Guinea, the Philippines, and recently Europe. Grows on bark of trees or shrubs or on rocks, in moist eucalypt forests or woodlands, in riparian habitats, sometimes in sheltered niches of less moist habitats. | ||
