| Thallus firmly attached, to 12 cm wide. Lobes numerous, radiating, often elongated, 1–2.5 mm wide, contiguous or partially overlapping at periphery, towards centre short, compacted, imbricate, ±inflated, entire or with short, rounded or irregular divaricate lateral lobes, occasionally toe-like in early stages, later obscuring centre of thallus, not or little blackened laterally. Upper surface smooth, ±shining or faintly punctate-rugose, pale grey, not suffused brownish, not or occasionally pale punctate-blotched. Cavity white above, ±purple-black tomentose below. Perforations scattered, median on main lobes, 0.5–1 mm wide, rounded or oval; rim elevated, volcano-like. Apothecia laminal, scattered, rarely contiguous, 0.3–0.7 mm wide, usually pedicellate; pedicel often irregularly fluted with uneven, vertical ridges; disc matt, epruinose, red-brown to dark brown; exciple smooth becoming finely striate, coarsely uneven-crenulate at maturity. Ascospores 2 per ascus, 35–60 × 30–35 µm, shortly ellipsoidal; wall 4–4.5 µm thick. Pycnidia occasional, mainly on lateral lobes; ostiole blackened. Conidia 4–5 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow (atranorin); medulla K+ orange, KC+ orange, C-, P+ orange (stictic, constictic, menegazziaic and norstictic acids, and UV+ white unidentified compound). | ||
| Occurs in Qld and N.S.W. on bark, often encircling twigs; often coalescing, more rarely forming small, often incomplete or irregular rosettes on older branches, very rarely orbicular on trunks. An endemic rainforest canopy species. | ||
