Thallus closely attached, rosette-forming to irregularly spreading, 1–3 cm wide, or scattered and fragmentary. Lobes subdichotomously to irregularly branched, 1 mm wide, flat to concave. Upper surface smooth, shining, pale yellow-green, often faintly pale yellow-blotched. Perforations rounded, sparse, to 0.5 mm wide. Soralia numerous, laminal, often arising from edge of perforations, becoming ±elevated, flange-like and eventually helmet-shaped and vesicular. Lower surface naked, smooth, slightly shining, eperforate, black or brownish black; apices brownish. Apothecia unknown. CHEMISTRY: usnic and lecanoric acids; medulla K-, C+ rose, KC+ red, P-. | ||
Occurs in Tas. on bark; on twigs of trees and shrubs in exposed alpine vegetation in clearings, rare in rainforest; also in New Zealand and southern South America. | ||
