Parmelia (Menegazzia) nothofagi Zahlbr., Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math.–Naturwiss. Kl., Denkschr. 104: 360 (1941). T: Raetihi, Wellington, N.Z., J.E.Attwood A34; holo: W.

Thallus rosette-forming, to 5 cm wide. Lobes numerous, fragile, 0.5–0.8 mm wide, to 5 mm long, irregularly branched, sometimes subpalmate towards outer edge, contiguous or imbricate centrally and there sometimes ±ascending, hollow; lower side of internal cavity blackened; apices elevated, pale brown or red-brown. Upper surface concave or flat, shining, pale green-grey to lettuce green or brownish, faintly white-blotched at apices and margins; margins not, or only sparingly, blackened. Perforations numerous, depressed, oval or rounded, gaping, with an inrolled edge, 0.2–0.5 mm wide. Soredia on upper surface and perforation margins, derived from erosion of isidia-like pustules. Vesicles at first simple, or several contiguous, hollow, nodular, proliferating to form clusters which often cover older parts of thallus, often abraded at apices. Apothecia unknown. CHEMISTRY: stictic, constictic, norstictic (trace) and menegazziaic acids and ±atranorin; medulla K+ orange, C-, KC+ orange, P+ orange.

Occurs in lowland to montane N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas., on bark of rainforest trees and on soil or rocks in coastal heath and in dry sclerophyll forest, often in very shaded habitats; also in New Zealand.
