| Thallus closely attached, to 10 cm wide. Lobes numerous, 1–3 mm wide, with main lobes often obscured by short, overlapping secondary lobes, imbricate-congested, hollow; lower side of cavity grey-white; lobe ends concolorous, often suffused brown; marginal lobes irregularly branched, contiguous or imbricate, sometimes blackened. Upper surface flat, becoming convex, often finely rugose, without soredia or isidia, grey or dull green-grey, often ±suffused or minutely spotted red-brown or dark brown. Perforations scattered, c. 1 mm wide; rim depressed. Apothecia abundant, sessile or subpedicellate, usually 2–4 mm wide; disc concave, becoming flat, epruinose, red-brown or brown; exciple thick, entire, even or sometimes angular, rarely lacerate. Ascospores 2 per ascus, (40–) 45–50 (–55) µm; walls thickened when immature. CHEMISTRY: atranorin (cortex), stictic aggregate but lacking hypostictic and hyposalazinic acids; medulla K+ yellow-red, C-, KC+ red, P+ orange. | ||
| A common alpine species in south-western Tas.; occurs on bark, and rarely also on sedimentary rocks, mainly in canopy and on understorey twigs in open montane forest; rare in rainforest; also in New Zealand. | ||
