| Primary thallus granular to subsquamulose, smooth to scabrid, grey-white to dull ashen grey, occasionally somewhat blackened; granules convex, 0.1–0.5 mm wide, ±discrete or coalescing into a thick, spreading, areolate crust. Podetia to 20 mm tall and 1–4 mm wide, ±erect, subterete, hollow, simple or sparingly branched in lower part, densely proliferating and longitudinally fissured towards apices, covered with contiguous or dispersed thalline granules, or partially decorticate and exposing a cartilaginous, brown-black medulla. Apothecia numerous, discrete, 0.5–1.5 mm wide, strongly convex, immarginate, glossy, black, commonly forming conglomerate clusters to 4 mm wide. Ascospores 10.5–12 × 2.5–4.5 µm, simple.
