Thallus verrucose to verruculose, bullate, yellowish white to whitish grey, epruinose, glossy. Soredia absent. Prothallus whitish grey. Apothecia sessile, 0.3–0.7 mm diam.; disc pale to dark grey-brown or greyish red-brown, epruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, entire, verrucose. Cortex hyaline, opaque, inspersed with numerous small crystals, 20–35 µm thick laterally and basally. Amphithecium with large and small crystals; small crystals soluble in KOH (melacarpella-type). Parathecium hyaline, with small crystals, 10–15 µm thick. Epihymenium red-brown to grey-brown, c. 10–15 µm thick, with crystals (pulicaris-type); crystals and pigmentation soluble in KOH. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and not thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal to broadly ellipsoidal, 7.5–11.0 × 4.5–7.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ yellow; containing atranorin (major), chloroatranorin (major), stenosporonic acid (major), thiophanic acid (major), constipatic acid (minor), dehydroconstipatic acid (minor) and an unknown fatty acid (minor). | ||
An endemic species in northern W.A. and N.T., L. arafurensis occurs on south-facing sandstone at elevations of 100–200 m in open Eucalyptus woodland. | ||
