| Thallus crustose-squamulose to peltate, yellowish white to whitish grey, epruinose, glossy, covered by an epinecral layer; lower surface with a c. 25 µm thick gelatinous cortex. Soredia absent. Prothallus not visible. Apothecia immersed when immature, becoming sessile to constricted at the base, 0.5–1.2 mm diam.; disc red-brown, epruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thick, ±verrucose. Cortex hyaline, opaque, gelatinous, 25–35 µm thick laterally and 30–35 µm thick basally. Amphithecium lacking crystals, densely packed with algal cells; algal layer continuous below the hypothecium. Epihymenium c. 10–15 µm thick, red-brown, K–, with numerous small crystals soluble in KOH. Hymenium hyaline, inspersed with oil droplets. Hypothecium hyaline. Subhymenium hyaline, thick and gelatinous. Paraphyses sparingly branched; apices capitate, to c. 3.5 µm wide. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 9.5–12.0 × 4.5–6.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K–, C–, Pd–; containing 2,7-dichloro-lichexanthone (major), 7-chloro-6-O-methylnorlichexanthone (minor), 2,7-dichloro-6-O-methylnorlichexanthone (minor) and 7-chlorolichexanthone (trace). |  |
