Orphniospora moriopsis (A.Massal.) D.Hawksw.

Thallus pale to dark grey or brownish grey, 0.3–0.5 mm thick, forming patches to 6 cm wide, esorediate; areoles angular to roundish, plane to convex, 0.3–1.0 mm diam.; cortex 6–8 µm thick, with the outer cells pigmented olive-grey, overlain by an epinecral layer; photobiont cells globose, 7–15 µm diam.; medulla brownish, weakly I+ violet. Prothallus prominent, visible between the areoles and at the perimeter of the thallus. Apothecia roundish, scattered, only slightly constricted at the base, plane or slightly convex; margin thin, at first distinct but later becoming excluded, matt or slightly glossy. Excipulum 60–85 µm thick, laterally 35–75 µm, opaque dark brown within, grey to greenish brown at the outer edge. Hypothecium opaque dark brown, somewhat K+ reddish brown, 200–600 µm thick. Hymenium hyaline, pale brownish or pale red-brown, 50–65 µm thick, I+ blue, with a dark green epihymenial layer, 15–20 µm thick, K+ green intensifying, N+ reddish. Paraphyses 1.5–2.0 µm thick, with the apices swollen to 3–4 µm. Asci 42–45 × 12–16 µm. Ascospores ellipsoidal, dark brown, 10–18 × 6–10 µm; wall relatively thick, c. 1.7 µm. Conidia 3–4 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: No substances detected by TLC.
