Thallus pendulous, to more than 100 cm long,green to deep green; branching from primary branches subparallel; trunk pale; branches terete to irregularly slightly flattened, 0.5–1.0 mm wide, with annular cracks, partly decorticate (irregular plates of cortex remaining); branchlets short; fibrils 2–10 mm long; papillae absent. Isidia on some fibrils and dense on plates of cortex, surrounded by pulverulent tissue; pseudocyphellae raised, orbicular, mainly on fibrils and branchlets; soralia absent. Cortex dull. Medulla powdery; axis 1/2–3/5 width of branch, pink to wine-red or brown. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K–; containing protocetraric acid (major) and ±malonprotocetraric acid (minor). | ||
Rare on trees at rainforest margins in eastern Qld. Also in East Africa and India. | ||
