| Thallus shrubby, erect, to 3 cm tall, pale green; branching subdichotomous, irregular; trunk usually black; branches terete, to 1 mm wide, smooth; apices blunt, often covered with soredia; branchlets and fibrils moderately dense; papillae on primary and secondary branches, few or absent on other branches; pseudocyphellae absent. Soralia large, well defined, usually capitate; soredia abundant, some pseudoisidiate to isidiate. Cortex matt. Medulla sparse; axis 1/2–3/5 width of branch, hyaline. Apothecia not known. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K–; containing psoromic acid, or stictic acid aggregate, or fatty acids only. | ||
