| Thallus shrubby, straggly, to 7 cm long,pale green to grey-green; branching dense, irregular; trunk usually black; branches terete, to 1 mm wide; apices tapered, usually conspicuously forked; branchlets few to many; fibrils numerous on primary and secondary branches, absent from tertiary branches; papillae dense, sparse in basal region. Isidia sparse, rarely dense, only in pseudocyphellae; pseudocyphellae dense on terminal branches, some at tips of low papillae, punctiform, concave; soralia absent. Cortex matt. Medulla arachnoid; axis 1/5–1/3 width of branch, hyaline. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K–; containing scabrosin 4-acetate4’-butyrate (major), scabrosin 4-acetate4’-hexanoate (minor), scabrosin 4,4’-dibutyrate (trace), scabrosin 4,4’-diacetate (faint trace) and ±protocetraric acid (trace) or norstictic acid (minor), salazinic acid (trace) and unknown fatty acids. | ||
| Rare and endemic in moist, exposed, montane sites above 1000 m and in dense, sclerophyll forest at c. 300 m in eastern Qld and N.S.W. | ||
