| Thallus shrubby, erect, rarely straggly, to 8 cm long, pale green to yellowish green; branching ±dichotomous; trunk with annular cracks, usually black; branches terete, to 1.5 mm wide, ±slightly inflated, rarely faveolate, articulate, with or without cracks bordered by white rings; primary and secondary branches usually much thicker than tertiary branches; apices tapered or blunt; short branchlets often arising from primary and secondary branches; fibrils sparse or absent; papillae, when present, dense on primary and secondary branches. Isidia in pseudocyphellae only, dense, small; pseudocyphellae sparse or absent on primary and secondary branches, common on terminal branches, not in bands, punctiform, round, concave or plane, not raised, usually large on branchlets; soralia absent. Cortex thick, matt to glossy, sometimes waxy. Medulla dense; axis 1/4–1/2 width of branch, hyaline. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K–; containing fumarprotocetraric acid (major), protocetraric acid (minor), ±lobaric acid (minor), ±physodalic acid (faint trace), malonprotocetraric acid (trace), confumarprotocetraric acid (faint trace), succinprotocetraric acid (trace), conprotocetraric acid (trace) and hypoprotocetraric acid (trace), or protocetraric acid, or lacking lichen substances. | ||
| Occurs in montane rainforest (on Nothofagus) at one locality in N.S.W.; also in Vic. and common in Tas. Also in Macquarie Is., New Zealand and South America. | ||
