Thallus areolate; areolae small, plane, rarely becoming hollow; surface coarse or granular, often dissolving into soredia or becoming completely sorediate. Soredia bright yellow to brownish or greenish yellow. Medulla (or base of soredia) never with calcium oxalate crystals. Apothecia between squamules or separated from the thallus, 0.3–1.5 mm diam., usually sessile, occasionally clustered in stalked clumps; disc slightly concave, plane or convex, black, epruinose, uneven to cracked; margin rather thick and prominent at first, later sometimes ±excluded; epithecium dark brownish in the upper part, greenish with a brownish or bluish tinge below; hymenium 100–140 µm high. Asci 8-spored, 90–135 × 10–12.5 µm. Ascospores long-acicular, arranged within the ascus at the same height, 7–12 (–14)-septate, (40–) 50–90 × 2.5–3.5 (–4) µm. CHEMISTRY: Rhizocarpic acid, epanorine, atranorin (traces) and an unknown yellow pigment. | ||
Occurs in N.S.W. and Tas.; grows on peaty and sandy soil and bryophytes in rock crevices in alpine heathland (above 900 m) and on other lichens (e.g. Siphula spp.). Also in Europe, North America, Greenland, Asia, New Zealand and Antarctica. | ||
