Bunodophoron flaccidum (Kantvilas & Wedin) Wedin
Pl. Syst. Evol. 187: 232 (1993); Sphaerophorus flaccidus Kantvilas & Wedin, Nova Hedwigia 54: 494 (1992). T: Truchanas Huon Pine Reserve, Tas., 1985, G.Kantvilas 185/85; holo: HO; iso: BM, UPS.
Thallus decumbent, normally forming loosely pendant tufts of rather scattered branches. Fertile branches markedly flattened, 3–7 (–8.8) cm long, 1.6–3.8 mm wide, sparsely dichotomously divided 0–2 (–4) times, and with occasional lateral flattened usually neatly tapering branchlets to 7 mm long and 1 mm wide. Upper surface greyish green, occasionally somewhat olivaceous yellow-green, smooth, sometimes weakly wrinkled over the apothecia. Apothecia rare to frequent, mostly a little broader than the branches, 2–4.5 (–5.3) mm wide, terminal or ventral due to extension of the main branch with later production of apothecia on extending branchlets; margins of thalline receptacle entire, later flaring, commonly palmate with 3–5 flattened and tapering branchlets on the margin of older apothecia. Mazaedium exposed ventrally early in the development, prominent and often large. Ascospores 9–12.5 (–14) µm diam., pale to dark reddish brown. Conidia oblong, slightly thickened towards the ends, 3–4 × 1–1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K–, P+ red; containing protocetraric acid, ascomatic acid and methyl ascomatate.
Localised and rare in Tas. where it occurs as an epiphyte in thamnic and implicate rainforest. Also in New Zealand.
