Bunodophoron macrocarpum (Ohlsson) Wedin
Pl. Syst. Evol. 187: 233 (1993);Sphaerophorus macrocarpus Ohlsson, in D.J.Galloway, New Zealand J. Bot. 21: 197 (1983). T: between Tornado Creek and Whelan Creek, Gillespies Cook River Rd, Westland, New Zealand, 1971, R.Harris 6241; holo: MSC.
Thallus erect, forming cushions or patches or extensive colonies of mostly broadly flattened sterile branches, with fertile ones irregularly intermingled. Fertile branches narrow at the ultimate base, then broadly flattened, 2–6 cm long, 2.1–8 (–12) mm wide, with thin subterete brittle branchlets along the upper margin of the flattened thallus; thicker subterete marginal branches carrying terminal apothecia; supporting branches 1–3 mm wide at the apothecial base. Upper surface greyish to brownish green, smooth but wrinkled above the apothecia and the uppermost part of the supporting branch. Apothecia terminal, globose when young, hemispherical at maturity, considerably wider than the supporting branch, 4–8.5 (–10.4) mm wide; thalline receptacle strongly wrinkled to scrobiculate, broad and flaring when mature. Mazaedia subapically exposed, partly enclosed by the receptacle. Ascospores 7.5–11 µm diam., reddish brown to greyish brown. Conidia bacilliform or with slightly acute apices, 3–6 × 1–1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K+ yellow, P+ orange (reactions often localised to branch tips or apothecia, rarely lacking completely); containing sphaerophorin, 7-O-methylnorascomatic acid, stictic acid, constictic acid, cryptostictic acid (trace), isousnic acid (trace), placodiolic acid (trace), 4-O-demethylsphaerophorin (trace) and skyrin (trace).
Occurs in Tas.; a widely distributed (particularly at higher altitudes) but rarely abundant epiphyte in cool-temperate rainforest. Also in New Zealand and Chile.
