Bunodophoron murrayi (Ohlsson) Wedin

  Pl. Syst. Evol. 187: 234 (1993); Sphaerophorus murrayi Ohlsson, in L.Tibell, Nordic J. Bot. 1: 335 (1981). T: 8 miles [c. 13 km] W of Turiwhate, Westland, New Zealand, 1971, R.Harris 6343; holo: MSC.

Thallus forming small patches to large colonies of crowded and imbricate weakly decumbent or horizontal branches. Fertile branches narrowly to broadly flattened, 1.8–5 (–7.5) cm long, 1.5–4.5 mm wide; secondary branches usually short and palmately branched; branches of higher orders ('lateral outgrowths' sensu G.Kantvilas & M.Wedin, Nova Hedwigia 54: 493–502, 1992) often abundant. Upper surface greenish or brownish grey, smooth or weakly rugose above the apothecia. Apothecia common, terminal or, occasionally, ventral due to extension of main branch with repeated production of apothecia, 1.5–6.5 mm wide; margin often lined by small branchlets. Mazaedia ventrally exposed, soon becoming large and prominent, not enclosed by a thalline receptacle which ruptures early. Ascospores
10–13 (–16.5) µm diam., reddish brown. Conidia oblong, 3–4.5 × 1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K–, P+ red; containing protocetraric acid, ascomatic acid, patagonic acid (trace), methyl ascomatate (trace), 7-O-methylnorascomatic acid (trace) and usnic acid (trace).

Occurs in Qld, N.S.W. and Tas.; widespread but rare, mainly in callidendrous cool-temperate rainforest. Also in New Zealand.
