| Thallus ±erect, forming small discrete tufts or large colonies. Fertile branches usually subterete, occasionally terete or narrowly compressed, 3–5.5 (–7.5) cm long, 1–2 (–3) mm wide. Branches lined with ±abundant bundles of relatively short coralloid brittle branchlets. Upper surface distinctly yellow (in exposed situations) to greenish to yellowish grey (greener in deep shade), smooth but usually somewhat areolate close to and above the apothecia. Apothecia common, terminal, 1.5–3.5 (–4.5) mm wide; thalline receptacle normally partly persisting, often subglobose when young, often fringed by small terete branchlets. Mazaedia subapically (rarely almost apically) exposed. Ascospores 6.5–9.5 (–11) µm diam., grey to dark grey, often with a bluish tinge. Conidia bacilliform, 4–5 (–5.5) × 1.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K+ yellow, P+ yellow-orange (reactions often restricted to branch tips or apothecia); containing isousnic acid, sphaerophorin, stictic acid and constictic acid, with several unidentified substances occurring in trace amounts. | ||
| Occurs in N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.; a widespread and very common epiphyte in cool-temperate rainforest. Also in New Zealand, Argentina and Chile. | ||
