Thallus adnate centrally, ±free at the margins, 10–15 cm wide. Lobes sublinear, irregularly to dichotomously branched, 4–10 mm wide; apices rotund to subrotund; margins entire, subascending. Upper surface brownish black when wet, olive-brown to tan when dry, dull, distinctly reticulate-faveolate, with conspicuous interconnecting ridges, lacking soredia and phyllidia; isidia sparse to moderately dense, erect, cylindrical, fragile, becoming coralloid-branched, to 0.6 mm tall, mainly on reticulate ridges. Photobiont green. Lower surface pale brown with bullate glabrous areas separated by a network of dark brown tomentum, sparsely to densely rhizinate centrally; rhizines simple or squarrosely branched, dark brown. Apothecia rare on ridges of lobes, 3–5 mm wide; disc plane, red-brown; thalline exciple ±isidiate; margin entire. Ascospores fusiform, 3-septate at maturity, 20–22 × 5–6 µm, colourless. Pycnidia not seen in Australian material. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K+ pale yellow; medulla K+ yellow, C+ pink, KC+ pale red, P+ orange; containing gyrophoric acid (major), stictic acid (major), constictic acid (minor), norstictic acid (minor) and cryptostictic acid (trace). | ||
Scattered in coastal and hinterland forests of eastern Australia (Qld, N.S.W. and A.C.T.); grows on bark and more rarely on moist rocks. This subtropical-temperate species also occurs in the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia (Sabah). | ||
