  Thallus a single peltate squamule to 2 mm wide, anchored by an umbilicus, dark olive-green to olive-brown; margin often markedly undulate, sorediate. Upper cortex absent; epinecral layer to 10 µm thick, yellowish to brown. Medulla composed of loosely interwoven hyphae with elongated and 2.5 µm thick, or globose and 7 µm diam. cells, with an poorly delimited photobiont layer in the upper third. Lower cortex 20–75 µm thick, pseudoparenchymatous with globose hyphal cells 7–8 µm diam. Apothecia rare, 1–several per squamule, adnate, with a raised margin when mature; disc widely exposed, reddish, brown or blackish. Asci clavate to obclavate; ascus wall orange in iodine, blue after pretreatment with KOH. Ascospores more than 100 per ascus, globose to ellipsoidal, 5–7.6 × 3–4.5 µm. Pycnidia globose, to 0.15 mm diam.; conidia fusiform, 3.1–3.7 × 1.2 µm.
     
  Occurs on acidic rocks and occasionally on calcareous rocks in desert and other open arid habitats in W.A., N.T., S.A. and Qld. Also in south-western North America, southern Africa and Norfolk Is.
