Peltula congregata (Nyl.) Swinscow & Krog
     
  Norweg. J. Bot. 26: 217 (1979); Endocarpiscum congregatum Nyl., Bull. Soc. Linn. Normandie,sér. 2, 2: 519 (1869). T: Benguella, Angola, Welwitsch; holo: H-NYL 30857.  
     
  Thallus compound; squamules subfruticose, sparsely branched, convex or flattened in the upper part of the thallus, to 7 mm tall and 5 mm wide, olive-grey to brownish grey, somewhat glossy; lower surface brown to reddish brown, attached to the substratum by a rather flat stalk. Upper cortex absent; epinecral layer 8–17 µm thick, yellowish. Medulla with numerous small cavities; photobiont layer sharply delimited in the upper part of the medulla. Lower cortex to 24 µm thick, composed of globose hyphae. Apothecia numerous, immersed; disc punctiform, to 0.2 mm diam., brown to black. Asci clavate to obclavate; ascus wall and apical dome slightly blue in iodine, blue after pretreatment with KOH. Ascospores more than 100 per ascus, globose to ellipsoidal, 3.5–5 × 2.5–3.5 µm. Pycnidia immersed, cerebriform, to 0.25 mm diam.; conidia fusiform, 2.5–3.5 × 1 µm.
     
  Occurs on acidic seepage rocks in an open arid habitat in central Australia (N.T.). Also in southern, eastern and western Africa and Korea.
