Thallus squamulose-peltate, yellow-olive to yellow-brown; squamules to 2 mm diam., to 0.3 mm thick, plane to slightly convex, anchored by an umbilicus; mature thalli deeply divided into 3–5 lobes; margin smooth, not down-curved. Upper cortex absent or poorly developed; epinecral layer 7–10 µm thick, yellowish. Photobiont layer 80–85 µm thick. Medulla composed of loosely interwoven hyphae with globose to elongate cells. Lower cortex proso- to paraplectenchymatous, 20–25 µm thick. Apothecia immersed, several per squamule; disc punctifom, reddish brown; margin sometimes slightly protruding. Asci clavate to obclavate; ascus wall wine-red in iodine when mature, blue when immature; all asci blue after pretreatment with KOH. Ascospores many per ascus, globose to ellipsoidal, 3–6 × 2–3.5 µm. Pycnidia completely immersed, cerebriform; conidia fusiform, c. 1.5 × 0.5 µm. | ||
Known from W.A. and Qld; grows on acidic and volcanic rocks in arid and semi-arid habitats. Also known from Mauritius, southern Africa, Cape Verde Is. and Italy. | ||
