Thallus rosette-forming to irregularly spreading, loosely to closely attached centrally, 2–5 (–8) cm wide; margins and apices free and subascending. Lobes very variable, linear-laciniate to irregularly divided and incised, often crowded, canaliculate, 1–2 (–3) cm long, 2–5 (–8) mm wide; lobe margins entire to irregularly notched, incised to ±phyllidiate, not thickened below. Upper surface pale grey to glaucous brown when dry, dark blue-green when wet, undulate to irregularly punctate-impressed, wrinkled or ±faveolate, glossy in patches, and with patches of silky white to brown tomentum, rather thin and fragile, papery, maculate and phyllidiate, without isidia or soredia. Maculae white or fawn, scattered, effigurate to ±reticulate. Pseudocyphellae occasional, scattered, minute, punctiform, white. Phyllidia occasional, marginal, simple or finger-like to branched-coralloid, flattened, constricted at base, 1–3 mm tall. Medulla white. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface whitish or pale fawn at margins to pale or dark red-brown centrally, densely tomentose from margins to centre or with a narrow glabrous marginal zone; tomentum silky, entangled to shaggy, white; pseudocyphellae scattered, conspicuous at margins, conical-verruciform, 0.1–0.5 mm diam. with a white decorticate area. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: 7β-acetoxyhopane-22-ol, hopane-7β,22-diol (trace) and hopane-15α,22-diol. | ||
