| Thallus irregularly spreading, loosely attached centrally, 5–10 cm wide. Lobes broadly elongate-laciniate, subdichotomously to irregularly branching, 1–5 cm long, 5–10 (–15) mm wide, discrete at margins, ±imbricate centrally; sinuses prominent; lobe margins entire, sinuous, occasionally ragged-notched, eroded white-sorediate, slightly wrinkled and thickened below. Upper surface pale livid brown-grey when dry, slatey blue-grey or blue-green to blue-black when wet, uneven, ±deeply punctate-impressed to shallowly faveolate, matt, maculate (×10 lens). Soralia white, marginal, occasionally punctiform, commonly linear-confluent, eroding lobe margins; medulla appearing yellowish below; soredia coarse-granular, grey-white. Medulla white. Photobiont Nostoc. Lower surface glabrous and pale yellow-buff at margins, darkening to red-brown and tomentose centrally. Pseudocyphellae scattered to frequent, white (rarely pale yellowish). Apothecia not seen in Australian material. CHEMISTRY: Tenuiorin, methyl gyrophorate, hopane-6α,7β,22-triol, stictic acid, constictic acid and cryptostictic acid. |  |
